As a passenger with an EU-based airline, you have rights under EU Regulation 261/2004. If the delay, cancellation or overbooking was within the airline's control, you are entitled to up to €600 in financial compensation.

When are you entitled to compensation from Iberia?

You can claim compensation if:

  • Your flight arrived more than 3 hours later than the scheduled arrival time

  • You were notified of a cancellation less than 14 days before departure

  • You were denied boarding due to overbooking

Compensation basically depends on two factors:

  1. The length of your flight

  2. The length of the delay – i.e. how many hours later you arrived at your destination than originally planned

In the compensation table below, you can get an overview of how much compensation you can get from Iberia and Iberia Express .

Check if you are entitled to compensation from Iberia

When is compensation not covered?

Iberia may be exempt from paying compensation if the delay or cancellation was due to extraordinary circumstances, such as:

  • Bad weather

  • Political unrest

  • Terrorist threats

  • Security considerations

  • Closed airspace

However, many airlines attempt to avoid paying by invoking "extraordinary circumstances," even in situations where the airline is actually in control. At Refundmore, we investigate whether this is legally valid, and if we assess that passengers are entitled to compensation, we will take the case to court if necessary.

Cancelled flights with Iberia – your rights

If you have experienced a cancelled flight with Iberia and you:

  • Were informed of the cancellation less than 14 days before departure

  • Were not offered an alternative flight

  • Arrived at your destination more than 2 hours later than your original itinerary

... then you are probably entitled to financial compensation and possibly also a full refund of your ticket.

We often see cancellations without suitable rebooking – and in these cases, passengers are entitled to compensation.

Delayed flights with Iberia

If your flight is delayed by more than 3 hours, you are entitled to compensation – provided that the delay is not due to circumstances beyond the airline's control.

Typical reasons that do not exempt Iberia:

  • Technical problems

  • Lack of staff

  • Operational problems

  • Overbooking

When the doors open at the destination more than 3 hours later than scheduled and the airline is responsible, you can claim compensation.

Denied boarding due to overbooked Iberia flight

If you have been denied boarding at the gate due to an overbooked flight, you are entitled to the same compensation as for delayed and cancelled flights, where you arrive at your destination more than 4 hours later than scheduled. If you are not rebooked on another suitable departure, you are of course also entitled to a refund of your ticket.
