Finnair cancels flights due to technical problems
This week (week 42 2025), Finnair has had to cancel around 20 flights a day after eight of their Airbus A321 aircraft were temporarily taken out of service. The reason is a safety issue with the cleaning of aircraft seats, which needs to be investigated further.
This means that thousands of travellers are experiencing cancellations and delays – both on domestic and European routes.
Have you had a Finnair flight cancelled? You may be entitled to compensation
Although Finnair offers free rebooking and refunds, as a passenger you may still be entitled to up to €600 in compensation if your flight was cancelled at short notice, i.e. within 14 days of departure.
According to EU passenger rights (Regulation 261/2004), compensation applies when:
You were notified of the cancellation less than 14 days before departure
Your flight was scheduled to depart from the EU or arrive in an EU country with an EU-based airline
The reason is not an extraordinary circumstance (such as extreme weather or a strike by authorities)
A maintenance problem or cleaning error such as this is not normally considered an extraordinary circumstance – and you may therefore be entitled to compensation.
