Which countries can't you travel to with a UK passport?

The UK passport is among the most powerful passports in the world. It provides access to visa-free travel in 186 countries, placing UK citizens high on the Henley Passport Index. But despite these benefits, there are still countries that UK citizens cannot easily travel to without special permits. In this blog post, we dive into which countries you cannot travel to with a UK passport and why.

UK passports in an international context

The UK passport gives access to fantastic destinations such as Spain, Greece, Singapore, South Korea, Germany, Sweden, Italy, Portugal, France, and San Marino - without a visa. Popular with adventurous travelers, these countries offer everything from pristine beaches to fascinating history. If you're not sure where to go next, check out our blog post 'The 10 best holiday spots in Europe'.

The UK passport gives access - but not to all countries

Although the UK passport allows access to many countries, there are several countries where UK citizens are either denied entry or must apply for a visa in advance.

What does visa-free access mean?

When we talk about visa-free countries, it means that you as a UK citizen can travel to the country without a visa for a certain period of time. However, you may still be required to have an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), such as when travelling to Canada, USA or New Zealand.

Electronic entry authorisation requirement

Several popular destinations require you to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before departure. This applies even if you can travel visa-free to these countries. The ETA is not a visa, but simply a pre-approval to enter the country.

The purpose of ETA is:

  • Security check

  • Authorities can pre-assess travelers and determine if someone is a security risk.

  • Simplify entry

  • Speed up border control as information is already in the system.

  • Keeping visa freedom under control

  • ETA is a way to balance free travel with national security.

The following countries require ETA before travelling:

  • American Samoa

  • Australia

  • Canada

  • Guam

  • Israel

  • Kenya

  • Mozambique

  • New Zealand

  • Northern Mariana Islands

  • Puerto Rico

  • Saint Kitts and Nevis

  • Seychelles

  • Sri Lanka

  • USA

Applications can be completed online - often times there are several websites to apply through.

Countries with special restrictions

Some countries deny entry to people who have stamps from certain other countries. Below are examples of some countries that can be difficult to gain entry to or can cause denial of entry to other countries.

Israel and denied entry

If you have travelled to Israel previously and therefore have an Israeli visa in your passport, you may be denied entry to certain Middle Eastern countries - for example Lebanon, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

This is because these countries do not recognize Israel as a state and are in conflict or hostile to Israel for historical, political and religious reasons

Therefore, it is recommended to use two different passports if possible, or to travel with a foreign passport if you have dual citizenship.

Palestinian Autonomous Territories - a grey area

When it comes to Palestinian autonomous territories, the rules are complex. Access depends largely on the situation in the area and the political context. It's important to liaise with local authorities or the Danish embassy in Israel before you travel.

United Arab Emirates - visa-free, but check the rules

The United Arab Emirates (including Dubai and Abu Dhabi) allow visa-free entry for UK citizens for up to 90 days, but there are strict rules of behaviour that you should follow.

Required documents for all countries

No matter where you're travelling to, you need to have at least:

  • Valid passport

  • Return ticket or itinerary

  • Documentation for finances

  • Insurance

Be prepared - even in visa-free countries

Even in visa-free countries, local authorities can deny you entry if you cannot prove your travel purpose, finances or residence during your stay.

Advice for travelling abroad

Never travel without double checking:

And make sure you know your passenger rights before you travel – this can be a great help if you experience long delays or cancellations on your flight.

Your responsibility as a traveler

It is your responsibility as a traveler to make sure that you have the necessary documents and comply with the rules that apply to your destination. This applies to both short holidays and longer stays.
